It is legendary for its extreme danger and in 1995 the Inter-American Development Bank christened it as the "world's most dangerous road". One estimate is that 200-300 travelers were killed yearly along the road. The road includes crosses marking many of the spots where vehicles have fallen.
A South Yungas Road (also Chulumani Road) exists that connects La Paz to Chulumani, 64 km (40 miles) east of La Paz, and is considered to be nearly as dangerous as the north road.

I just got back from a 2 week trip to Costa Rica and its a little scary and I would recommend riding with a local and paying attention to them for a little bit before you drive there. I drove while I was there.
ReplyDeleteYou have to watch out for people and animals walking in the road or driving bikes. You cant stop behind them or slow down or you will get hit by the car behind you. You have to go around them hoping you dont hit a car on the other side.
People pass each other all the time especially in the mountains. You just have to be careful and be a defensive driver.
Just be aware of your surroundings and dont ever just stop in the road. Watch at stop signs and lights and you will do fine. I was so nervous but I did fine :)
